I believe that if you are done with recording or not using it for a few hours then power save mode is just fine. I think its best to switch off the machine if you know you won't be using it for a long period of time, say a few days but just to leave it on power save usually won't do harm and yes, your battery level drops but it also depends how much you use the device.
