Hi Penny, Believe you have the PTR1, the first generation recorder. It uses a Compact Flash card and a PCMCIA adapter. Both card and adapter are still available on line if anyone is interested in the unit. Thanks for your replies, but you don't seem to have followed this thread. I promise you that there is no fault with the power supplies. I have two of them, and both work perfectly on an older PTP1. The fact that four or five people have reported exactly the same problem, i.e. that using the power supply results in multiple restarts and the inability to charge, whereas USB charging works, does suggest very strongly indeed that there is a consistent fault either with the hardware or the firmware in the units.

Just to add that I've had the exact same problem with my Linio, and it is definitely not a problem with the power supply, but rather with the Pocket, either hardware or software. It's ironic that, as somebody pointed out, the fault prevents you from updating the firmware.

This is what made me wonder if there might be a fault with the transformer - perhaps a dry joint internally which looses contact when warm and then re-connects when cooling off.

I have had two PlexTalk Pockets. The first one I got in late 2012. In summer 2014 I got a failing recharge. So I got a few power supplies that worked; one worked sort-of for a few weeks, but then I managed to break that Plextalk's own power socket. I decided to get a new PlexTalk Pocket, and that came of course with its own power unit. I also purchased a spare power supply. Eventually, after about two years, the power started to give way again, not recharging etc., properlty. So I used the spare. For a few weeks, it worked fine, but then the same thing happened to that spare power supply. Since then, I've been charging the PlexTalk by USB to a computer, and using it to record some radio programmes (as before).
AC Voltages vary a bit between countries, even countries nominally using the same AC voltage, e.g., there's a slight difference between the UK and Ireland (although they both use the 220-240 range of voltage). Then there are also differences between European countries, and different again from the AAC voltages across North America.
The VR Stream and the VR Trek from HumanWare 2nd etc generations use USB to fully charge, and they recognise it when that state is attained - '100%, fully charged'. They can also record directly from Internet radio streams, of which there are the complete ooTunes built-in database of radio stations supplied. (You can also add your own stations if they weren't included, or if they changed their URL or format.)
The PlexTalk has better recording quality.
I wonder if there's a fairly sharp limit on the amount of charging cycles the Plextalk Pocket is able to take via AC/DC? I will add that I've heard of
other units, such as older braille displays that used AC to charge and USB to connect to a computer, having similar issues with AC charging after a while. If the batteries in themselves were the problem as such, we'd know it
soon enough.

Mine has been fine since I got it in around 2013 but has now started playing up in the way described.
I had wondered if it might be a failing power supply or the cable from the supply to the unit but it is unlikely as, when I leave it entirely untouched, it still flips from charging to not charging (as heard from the musical tones) randomly.
I had thought it might be the cable as they are solid core cables and, therefore, easy to fracture when used a lot, but am less sure of this possibility now.

Yes, I have this problem with my PTP 1, and I have found that USB works for charging.
Had they opted for the proper USB/AC charger, such as Humanware have done with their Victor Readers, this problem wouldn't have arisen.

There is definitely power going to the units, but they will not charge. Because of this I have now started to charge these units via a USB connection, either to a computer or listening device which has a USB charging facility, and everything is working fine.
Has anyone else had this problem? It has been a concern of mine for some time, especially as it affects all three units, but at least I have found a way round it. All my units are now fully charged, and using the USB facility seems to be much more reliable than using the mains.
