Hi Steve, Basically the power save mode is better for the unit to work than each time powering off completely. You should only power off when not using the PTP1 for a longer time. But it looks like the power on button is malfunctioning. It can be fixed. If you put the unit in power save mode and turn on the key lock function, then it will stay off until you turn off the key lock. Hope this helps. I am not sure if the cost of getting this fixed would be more cost efficient than just getting another unit, and keeping this one at home for my line-in recordings. I have also found that the lock key is becoming very sensitive to touch. I am not rough on the unit, but I guess many key presses can eventually be negative.
