My thought is that if the drive was dead you would not get any audio out of it at all. I suggest that you try more aggressive mirror cleaning technology. There are cleaners that use not only the dry CD cleaner but also supply a liquid cleaner. You might show it to a technician at your local audio store and let them try and clean it as well.
