A while ago I bought four new CF cards to use in my Plextor PTR2. Two of them are fine, but the other two don't seem to be recognised by my player. It reports that there is no free space on the cards, but I know there is nothing on them. I have sought advice from some technical friends, and have tried both cards on my computer. Going into properties, it reports that the cards are fine, having the normal amount of free space for 4GB cards. I did a check for errors on the properties tools tab, and the report was that everything was ok. Can anyone give any further advice, or are they just dud cards? Wendy
Hi, are the cards formated as FAT32? Probably they are formated as ExFAT or something else. And I am not sure if the CF cards also have a protection slider, but if so probably it is in the protected position and returns the wrong reply. Gretings Arno
Yes, they are FAT32, but I can't find any switch on them. There is probably a small notch on one side edge of the card and a larger notch on the other side edge. The larger notch is the side where the protector switch is located. Use your fingernail to locate another small notch on the edge near the larger notch. If the small notch is further away from the end of the card that you insert into a device, then the card is protected. Stick your fingernail in the smaller notch and slide the protector switch toward the end of the card that you insert into a device. Now the smaller notch is closer to the end of the card that you insert into a device, and the larger notch is further away. The card is now not protected, and you can read and write files to the card. I hope this helps. This sounds complicated, but is really easier to do than it is to describe. Once you locate the protector switch, just try both positions until you can create or paste files to the card. Well, the notches both look the same size, and however much I explore, I can't find any smaller notches inside them. All four cards were ordered at the same time, and as I said, two of them were fine. Hi, sounds really strange! If I understand you right, you are able to copy data to the card with your computer, and also can delete it? So the slider should be in the right position. So I suppose something in the slot of your PTR2 didn't work as it should do. May be one of the pins is at the limit of connection, so that one card reach the contacts the other one don't. Probably it is just dust. Greetings Arno
Are the two cards which work also 4GB? I know on my PTR1 that it will only cope with up to 2GB cards. I am not aware that the CF card comes with a protection switch-unlike SD types. They are all 4GB, and I have quite a lot of them. My PTR2 seems to cope very well with them, apart from these two. I have ordered another 4, so we'll see what happens when they come. Hi Steve,
Are the two cards which work also 4GB? I know on my PTR1 that it will only cope with up to 2GB cards.
The 2 GB limit on the cards are only for SD on PTR1. The PTR2 is able to handle SDHC cards, too. So SD cards larger than 2 GB are no problem at all for the PTR2. And for CF cards: The PTR1, and of course the PTR2, can handle CF cards up to 32 GB. Yours sincerely Arno
I have noticed that those switches do not always operate as they should. So that if you have the thing in the unprotected spot, sometimes the tiniest microscopic wiggle of the switch will put it back under protection. Hence, sometimes the switches, even when set correctly, yield the wrong reading. But when I put the card in a card reader, rather than one built into the computer, it, indeed reads correctly and lets me write to the card. Just experiential blitherings here. The switches are sometimes faulty, I guess, is what I am saying. On 10/7/2014 11:54 AM, Rob wrote:

Could you try formatting the cards to see if that might help if you say that there is nothing on them? (Note, if you have something saved on them already those will be deleted by formatting.) All the best.
