Yes, I agree this has added more steps than I care to go through for editing. As well, the upgrade from several months ago changed other things like requiring the main power to be plugged in in order to use the PlexTalk Pocket as a mass storage drive. I am just speculating but no text editing was previously possible from the edit menu. Adding this feature to the existing choices made necessary the generation of a new interface that permits you to initiate and close text entry. This is so different from the existing editing features that it was probably easier to add it as a separate pass rather than totally rewrite the existing code.
