It may also be worth doing a full shut down when you leave the unit for a while. The stand by mode certainly does use some battery life and, whilst there is a bit of a delay when booting back up from a shut down, if battery life is important to you, you've got to use all the methods of saving power for playback. It has ben a wile sense I ben on this list, it sounds like you may have a bad sell in the battery. I only use memory cards made by Sandisc. I get the hyer speed memory cards. That is, the memory on the cards has a more faster transfer rate. This also may save on battery life as well. I get about 7 to 8 hours on my PTP1 in recording and playing. Try giving the battery a good drain and charging it for a good 8 hours.
