Want to record music from my computer to my Plextalk and change the file from a daisy file to an mp3 file
Hi. I would like to record music from my computer to my ptp1 Plextalk player. After I record the album from my computer to my Plextalk can I change that file from a daisy file to an mp3 file? If I can do this, how do I go about changing the file from a daisy file to an mp3 file? Thanks allot and have a good day.
Its already either a wave or mp3 depending on your choices of recording mode in the recording mode setting on the plextalk. Its just a matter of removing the CF card from your plextalk and using an adapter to plug it into your USB port on your computer or using the USB utility cable that came with the plextalk to interface the plextalk directly to your computer. Then you can use your windows explorer to find the file and hit f2 and rename it something useful. You will not have to change the file extension it will already be either .mp3 or .wav however the file name will always be the same: a00000001.mp3 (I am just guessing on the number of zeros. The file is usually the top one under the book number folder associated with the recording. You can use the windows explorer to copy and paste the file where ever you want it to be after you give it a more functional name. Sorry about the reference to the CF card. I missed your reference to the PTP1. So its an SD card instead. Note: the daisy information is in all of the rest of the files in each book folder. You can just ignore them. But the top file is usually already mp3. Hi Just out of interest, what are you recording from your PC and why do you need to record it? Pele West
I want to record an album by Percy Faith that is on yutube and add it to my music library on my computer. Could you give me the steps on how to record the album from my computer to the plextalk player? Thanks. -----Original Message----- From: Plextalk [mailto:plextalk-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Pele West Sent: Tuesday, December 29, 2015 5:03 AM To: Plextalk User Discussion List <plextalk@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> Subject: Re: [Plextalk] Want to record music from my computer to my Plextalk and change the file from a daisy file to an mp3 file Hi Just out of interest, what are you recording from your PC and why do you need to record it? Hi Again Personally, I would use Goldwave or Audacity to record the Youtube stream on my computer. But if I was recording onto the Plextalk I would: 1. plug a lead with a 3.5 jack plug at each end into the headphone socket on the sound card and the microphone socket on the Plextalk. 2. Select Recording Settings from the Plextalk Menu 3. Press Select Recording Mode and choose a setting. I usually use Radio. 4. You will then see Select Sound Quality. Select the option you require. I usually record in MP3 Format at 128 Kbps 44.1 Khz Stereo. 5. Press the Record button. It will say "Starting DAISY Editing Mode, Please Wait" and a tip about pressing Record. 6. When you have the Youtube stream on the PC, press Record again and it should record to your SD card. 7. When the recording has finished, press Play/Stop to stop it. Pressing Record will just pause the recording. 8. Put the SD card on which you have just recorded the stream into a card reader on your PC. 9. Use Windows Explorer to find the PlexRecording folder. You should find a subfolder containing an MP3 file beginning with a number and some other DAISY files. Copy the MP3 file to your computer. This is the file you have just recorded. I have never actually recorded from my PC, so others may be able to advise you on the particular settings. I have recorded from my Hi-fi. I hope it goes well Pele West
Thanks allot pele. I will let yu know how it goes. I did find directions on how to record from the computer. However, I couldn't get to the speaker using the search feature in Windows 7. When recording from an external source, first select the input source. For your setup, go to menu, recording settings, select external audio input jack, enter. Left or right arrow for "line in mode". Enter. Select your recording parameters as below. Press record to create the title. It will be in standby mode and announce the parameters (e.g., "auto" for auto gain control default setting) Connect the headphone jack on the PC to the input jack on the Pocket. (top edge, left side) Play your selected music and then press the record button on the Pocket (or vice versa). The Pocket always records in DAISY, so the MP3 or WAV file will be in the PlexRecordings folder, in a folder with the numeric designation BookDir0, BookDir1, etc. Pull the file out of the folder for standalone playing. -----Original Message----- From: Plextalk [mailto:plextalk-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of John Christie Sent: Tuesday, December 29, 2015 10:36 AM To: 'Plextalk User Discussion List' Subject: Re: [Plextalk] Want to record music from my computer to my Plextalk and change the file from a daisy file to an mp3 file Hi Pele. Are you using your external mic as a recording input? Choose line-in instead. I'd also use 'audio' quality rather than radio, from a computer. I'd also set the recording level to Auto. (Make sure that the plug at the Plextalk end is plugged into the PTP microphone socket. Not the PTP headphone socket. On the PTP that's the leftmost of the two 3.5-inch sockets. If you'd rather, disconnect the computer speakers plug from the back of the computer and then plug the other 3.5 inch connector into it.) If it's a hihgh-quality disc, i.e., CD, then 256 kbps may also do. (You can record even at CD quality with the Plextalk, provided you've got the SD card space, of course.) -----Original Message----- From: John Christie Sent: Tuesday, December 29, 2015 6:36 PM To: 'Plextalk User Discussion List' Subject: Re: [Plextalk] Want to record music from my computer tomy Plextalk and change the file from a daisy file to an mp3 file Hi Pele. (You can record even at CD quality with the Plextalk, provided you've got the SD card space, of course.) -----Original Message-----

Hi Pele. I tried it with your directions but nothing came out. I only heard my own voice during the recording. I have an iT person who is my volunteer who is coming the 9th of January. I'll have him take a look at it and see what he thinks. If anybody else on the list has done recordings on the computer, you can send me step by step directions on how it's done. I am using a Windows 7 computer. Thanks allot pele. I will let yu know how it goes. I did find directions on how to record from the computer. However, I couldn't get to the speaker using the search feature in Windows 7. If you can tell me how to get to the speaker in Windows 7, I will try it with audacity. -----Original Message-----

I don't know. I 'borrowed' an extension cord from a pair of wireless headphones I have and use it to do the job. As Pele said earlier, the cord should have a 3.5-inch jack plug at both ends. It's specially important that it connect fully to your Plextalk's mic/line-in socket. -----Original Message----- From: John Christie Sent: Wednesday, December 30, 2015 6:56 PM To: 'Plextalk User Discussion List' Subject: Re: [Plextalk] Want to record music from my computer tomy Plextalk and change the file from a daisy file to an mp3 file One of the cords isn't connected securely even though when I plug it in to the plextalk it says line in. Hi Flor. I am using a Dell Laptop. I tried your suggestions but they haven't worked as yet. I am being asked what device did I plug in? Here are my choices: line in, mike in, headphone, speaker out, headset, Skullcandy head set and Dell speaker out. What choice should I pick? I think this is the reason why I can't get a recording. -----Original Message-----

I don't know. I 'borrowed' an extension cord from a pair of wireless headphones I have and use it to do the job. As Pele said earlier, the cord should have a 3.5-inch jack plug at both ends. I find it very very strange that folks like radio shack does not have these cables? Over here in South Africa you can walk into any small electronics shop and get them for almost nothing. Many computer places stock them also. When you call an electronic shop do not mention the name plextalk at all. Simply ask for a cable with 1 male 3.5 inch male stereo jack plug at each end. If you mention the plextalk it will simply confuse the matter as by far the most of them will not know what you are talking about. -----Original Message----- From: Plextalk [mailto:plextalk-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Flor Lynch Sent: 30 December 2015 11:53 PM To: Plextalk User Discussion List Subject: Re: [Plextalk] Want to record music from my computer tomy Plextalk and change the file from a daisy file to an mp3 file You're looking for, I believe, a line in cable, that has a 3.5-in jack plug at each end of it.

I don't know. I 'borrowed' an extension cord from a pair of wireless headphones I have and use it to do the job. As Pele said earlier, the cord should have a 3.5-inch jack plug at both ends. (You can record even at CD quality with the Plextalk, provided you've got the SD card space, of course.) -----Original Message-----

Sometimes, it's hard, though, because even though you know what you are doing, they want to see the device and show you how to do everything like you are in first grade, and that is not why you went there. You went there for a certain kind of cable. But they insist on knowing what you want to use it for, as if you don't know anything. I wish we could browse among the racks of stuff like the sighted people do, and pick out our own, so we wouldn't have that problem. Once-in-a-while, you get somebody who credits you with having a little knowledge. Pam, That does depend a bit on what item you're looking for. For example, if you're in immediate need of a power supply, the shop may give you one if you ask for it, but, without sight of the machine (Plextalkk Pocket) there's no guarantee that the plug will fit properly, or even that it will work. (Not unless you can provide them with most, or all of the necessary specific information.) Of course, in the case of the PTP they may not have a suitable power supply for it - this happened to me in the summer of 2014, when my supplied power unit stopped working. So I sschlepped down to the local shop and left the PTP charging via USB. I brought home a power supply to try. It fit, though it was a different type of plug; but it didn't deliver the juice. The following day I returned to the shop with my PTP and they told me they might have a supply for it in about seven days. Of course, they advised me to contact the vendor and get the supply from them; but they said they'd try (having taken the measurements as best they could.) I brought home the PTP, and, as luck would have it, iI found another power supply at home a day later which happened to work and did power up the PTP. -----Original Message----- From: Pamela Dominguez Sent: Thursday, December 31, 2015 5:54 PM To: Plextalk User Discussion List Subject: Re: [Plextalk] Want to record music from my computer tomy Plextalk and change the file from a daisy file to an mp3 file I make it a habit not to mention or show the specialized device I am going to use, because you are correct: it will just confuse the matter. What is the name of the cord that goes from the computer to the plextalk and where did you get it and how much does it cost? I think I have the wrong cord. -----Original Message-----

(You can record even at CD quality with the Plextalk, provided you've got the SD card space, of course.) -----Original Message-----

No, I'm not talking about power supplies, because I would need the specs for it: the size tip, the polarity and the voltage. But just something simple like a patchcord, or a certain kind of an adapter that I may be specific about, but they want to know: "What do you want to use it for?" Before I go into the store, I make sure I know what I need, and know what it will be used for. -----Original Message-----

You're looking for, I believe, a line in cable, that has a 3.5-in jack plug at each end of it. If you can't get that, then to record the file on your computer you may as well use Audacity or similar, or paid software. (It might be hard to get by itself.) -----Original Message-----

I don't know. I 'borrowed' an extension cord from a pair of wireless headphones I have and use it to do the job. As Pele said earlier, the cord should have a 3.5-inch jack plug at both ends.

(You can record even at CD quality with the Plextalk, provided you've got the SD card space, of course.) -----Original Message-----

I don't know. I 'borrowed' an extension cord from a pair of wireless headphones I have and use it to do the job. As Pele said earlier, the cord should have a 3.5-inch jack plug at both ends. I hope it goes well Pele West _______________________________________________ Plextalk mailing list Plextalk@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/plextalk _______________________________________________ Plextalk mailing list Plextalk@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/plextalk _______________________________________________ Plextalk mailing list Plextalk@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/plextalk _______________________________________________ Plextalk mailing list Plextalk@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/plextalk _______________________________________________ Plextalk mailing list Plextalk@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/plextalk _______________________________________________ Plextalk mailing list Plextalk@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/plextalk _______________________________________________ Plextalk mailing list Plextalk@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/plextalk _______________________________________________ Plextalk mailing list Plextalk@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/plextalk _______________________________________________ Plextalk mailing list Plextalk@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/plextalk _______________________________________________ Plextalk mailing list Plextalk@lists.hodgsonfamily.org https://lists.hodgsonfamily.org/listinfo/plextalk

Right. Here's a better answer. Search or call Amazon for a 3.5-inch male-to-male audio cable. That'll get it for ya. -----Original Message-----

I looked around, but I don't have one. I also called Amazon and Radio Shack but they didn't have one. If anyone comes up with any idea's of where I can get one let me know. -----Original Message-----

I don't know. I 'borrowed' an extension cord from a pair of wireless headphones I have and use it to do the job. As Pele said earlier, the cord should have a 3.5-inch jack plug at both ends. It's specially important that it connect fully to your Plextalk's mic/line-in socket. -----Original Message-----

One of the cords isn't connected securely even though when I plug it in to the plextalk it says line in. The cord that is plugged in to the plextalk is loose. What is the name of the cord that goes from the computer to the plextalk and where did you get it and how much does it cost? I think I have the wrong cord. -----Original Message-----

Is the cord connected securely, just the same as it is in the Plextalk? ? Try connecting it to Headphone/Speaker Out. -----Original Message-----
