the plextalk and the book port
Morning, Is there anyone on this list who owns both machines?? Otto
Well Otto, yes I first got a PlexTalk, then several months later bought a BookPort. Sure there are some obvious differences among the 2, but first lets see what kinds of things you wanna know about both units? Take care Hart
The plextalk pocket and book port plus both use the same hardware. Here are some of the differences: The Book Port Plus uses the up and down arrows, left and right arrows, and the numeric keypad for its navigation. The up and down arrows always control the speed, both for audio and text playback. The right and left arrows move by small increments, the one and three keys move by increments a bit larger, and the four and six keys move by even larger increments. This method is used both in audio and text titles. The eight key is used to cycle through the different navigation levels in a particular title while the seven and nine key move by that navigation choice. The Plextalk Pocket uses the up and down arrows to cycle through the available navigation options and the left and right arrows are used to move by the chosen option. The book port plus uses a different guide voice. -----Original Message----- From: Hart Larry Sent: Monday, July 30, 2012 8:50 AM To: Plextalk User Discussion List Subject: Re: [Plextalk] the plextalk and the book port Well Otto, yes I first got a PlexTalk, then several months later bought a BookPort. Also, turning a BookPort on or off is fairly quick, while much time goes along waiting for PlexTalk to come on. Certainly curious if the editing improvements this fall i BookPort will also appear in PlexTalk? Certainly for me, while the navigation is awkward, I really need to edit or nuke portions of live recordings. Hart
If I leave my plextalk in slep mode it comes on right a way. -----Original Message----- From: Hart Larry Sent: Monday, July 30, 2012 9:09 AM To: Plextalk User Discussion List Subject: Re: [Plextalk] the plextalk and the book port Also, turning a BookPort on or off is fairly quick, while much time goes along waiting for PlexTalk to come on. No Russ, I was comparing completely turning the units on-and-off. If I turn a BookPort on, within maybe 2seconds, it is ready for use, while Plextalk, you must hold the power button `a long time. Once you turn the unit back on, it probably takes 2minutes past a "please wait" message, then music while its loading windows7, then finally. Hart
I think that is another difference on how the book port plus works. There is a different way of completely shutting it down as compared on how it is done on the plextalk pocket. -----Original Message----- From: Hart Larry Sent: Monday, July 30, 2012 10:34 AM To: Plextalk User Discussion List Subject: Re: [Plextalk] the plextalk and the book port No Russ, I was comparing completely turning the units on-and-off. The pocket can also rite notes with the UK firmware. But BookPort plus is faster when pressing keys alot after another. So you can navigate a book a little faster. And bookport also support thum braille input in adition to the a b c moad. Tel us about the editing features, are you on the beta for the new firmware? Well Aidan, no I am not testing new versions, just anxiously looking forward to new editing options, also a table top BookPort. From what I understand we will be able to erase from current point to an end, also insert. Somewhere I heard a podcast demo of these. Considering I completely use both units for recording news programming from TV, I really need these editing options. Right now if I forget to stop a unit, I have no way of rewinding-and-erasing several minutes I may not want. Hope that provides some prospective Hart
Hi, My understanding is that with the book port plus you will soon be able to download and unzip books off the NLS web site, which is a big plus in my book. Wel I understand that those features are coming, but I'm not sure yet if they would only put that in the bookport desktop or both units, because if it will get its way to the current bookport, then it surely mean there is a good chance it could come to the pocket. But one thing I really wish is that they would allow to record directly onto cd via the external drive. On 30/07/2012, Otto Zamora <donttreadonme@bellsouth.net> wrote:
