NVDA Updater Scripts for a corporate network

Hi all, I promised to show you how I made the NVDA Updater i use here to get our chaotic NVDA installations in order. Should work. I tried that on a small scale at the moment. Prerequisites You need: * NVDA installer from the NV Access website. * NSIS installer from https://sf.net/projects/nsis/ * then you need psexec from the sysinternals tools from Microsoft: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ The following scripts are well commented out and so that shouldn't be a problem for someone who has a little bit a knowledge of some batch commands and some general commands and NSIS files. Please edit them that they fit your directory structure. The files makeupdate.bat: this file creates the silent installer out of the not so silent nvda installer. --- Begin --- @echo off rem clearing the screen cls rem deleting old temporary dirs and files rmdir /q /s nvda del nvdainstaller.exe rem installing a portable copy to a temp dir "%cd%\nvda_.exe" --create-portable-silent --portable-path "%cd%\nvda" rem because nvda silent portable isn't all that silent we need to restart the local installed copy "C:\Program Files (x86)\NVDA\nvda_slave.exe" launchNVDA -r rem now delete the old uninstaller because its not needed and its useless. cd nvda del uninstall.exe cd .. rem generating the realy silent installer "c:\nsis\makensis.exe" "%cd%\nvdainstaller.nsi" rem deleting old temporary dirs and files rmdir /q /s nvda --- End --- nvdainstaller.nsi: the NSIS script for the really silent installer. Now we have the installer. Then we copy that stuff on a share where people have access to. we have a software distribution share. Hi Andrew: Thanks a lot for the feedback. I did forward it onto the Azure Devops accessibility team and they are working through the issues you raised. We do test Azure DevOps pretty regularly, but as its such a large project we can be testing one part while a change is made in another part we may not catch right away. Access to Azure DevOps (was VSTS)

Hi, I have been using VSTS in various forms for a few years now. I find I can get my way around the build and release pipeline editors ok with a screen reader and some messing about in various places, but nothing too horible. I have not used it before for story management on the Agile platform, mainly using Jira before. We have now moved to using VSTS work items instead of Jira and I am finding it a real mess. The main items I am having issues with are: - When you open a work item and want to view child work items, the screen reader seems to have the parent work item in focus as well so you need to make absolutely sure you are editing the correct work item and not in some other parent work item form. Hi all, Some time ago, I read that Ciscovission had an academy for visually impaired where you could learn HTML5 through an online course, but that doesn't seem to be available anymore. But daily she remains in the building within the network. Obviously everytime she detaches from the dock wich is hard wired to the network, she then switches to wi-fi. Hi, I have a staff with a new Surface pro and dock. She reports that randomly when trying to save an excel dock, or browse to a network drive in a web browser her network drives are gone. I also confirmed that she disconnects and reconnects to her dock about 5 to 10 times a day and puts the tablet in sleep mode. I have always been aware that laptops going to sleep don't always regain network connectivity reliably. Anyone have any thoughts on best practices to avoid network drive loss for a Surface Pro user who moves around allot? Thanks. ###

Windows 10 Attack Surface Reduction rules

My laptop is running Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, recently upgraded to 1809. There's supposed to be a new option under Virus and Threat Protection to "block suspicious behaviours". However, I can't find it anywhere. This option apparently enables some or all of the Attack Surface Reduction rules. However, I was able to use PowerShell to enable the rules individually, which has the advantage of offering greater administrative control in any case. See this page: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/windows- defender-exploit-guard/enable-attack-surface-reduction My main question is whether the Attack Surface Reduction rules are effective in Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, or whether they really need Windows 10 Enterprise. Also, is there any action performed by screen readers that one should be aware of which would inadvertently fail due to one of these rules? Having looked at the rule descriptions, I can't think of any software that I'm likely to use which would obviously and legitimately perform actions that are blocked.

Hi, I haven't deleted anything from NVDA's files. I just replaced the installer. Today i guess i can post how i have done that. Since at that time, we never installed it in the master image. While it is a right-click and run as Admin type install I'm afraid, we can't silence the speech whilst NVDA is being installed. So unfortunately NVDA speaks only during install and thereafter the batch deletes all the unnecessary synth/braille files etc. I am looking at trying to create an MSI so its just one file, which will take care of everything and more so for running remotely. Seems we have something different with our admin accounts than with standard user accounts. seems i need to look into that. Remote Addon: You mean version 2.2? I have decided to remotely uninstall all installed copiesof NVDA and making my own remotely distribbutable silent installer. I have my nvda settings hosted on a network share where all users have access to. when i start nvda using my admin account i just need to wait 1-2 seconds until my pc is connected to the other machine. but with a normal user i have 30-40 seconds until nvda beeps and is connected. i have already turned off firewall, turned off antivirus, etc. nothing seems to help. when i start nvda without getting the data off the network, nvda is quick. the win 7 clients which we also having have no issues at all. we have win 10 enterprise 1803 with all cumulative updates. Hi, You might look into the file beep_sequence.py. maybe you can specify a very low beep which you can't hear over speakers. I was having this issue even though I am using account with administrative rights. Just a suggestion, Have you maybe tried using the latest version of NVDA along with the remote addon that just got updated? Another thing I've noticed with the remote addon, it seems to be fussy when it comes to computer names. For company reasons our computer names have dashes or hyphens in them for naming purposes. I noticed if I gave my pc a short name with no hyphens it seems to connect to the clients as soon as I tell them to click the icon on the desktop. I hope the above works for you because out of despearation I have also, 1. Installed NVDA along with addon in to the master image that we are deploying and Configured the settings to connect directly to the machine. I did try the suggestion to have the config on a share but, I was also experiencing long time of delay which caused a lot of frustration. Just a question, do you know perhaps how to switch off the beep on client side? I mean for the users who will connect to the machine, It is really not a nice thing for them to be hearing, especially in corporate environment I think. Hello core7xx(a)gmail.com, Interesting. Seems we have something different with our admin accounts than with standard user accounts. seems i need to look into that. Remote Addon: You mean version 2.2? Seems to work as the previous 2.1 version. seems also still slow on win 10 but not on win 7. We don't have computer names with dashes/hyphens so i guess i might be not able to help you on that. I have decided to remotely uninstall all installed copiesof NVDA and making my own remotely distribbutable silent installer. Seems i might need to put the settings also in there if i can't find the issue. i'll report about my nvda updater script in the next days i hope. works opretty well over here. Manage UPS in Windows 2012 R2

Hi: I need to connect a UPS in Windows 2012 R2 server and manage it via USB. I have tested the WinPower and ViewPower but they are not accessible with Jaws or NVDA. Any suggestions? UPS data: Salicru SLC-1000-TWIN Pro Regards, Ernesto
