Hello Everyone. I've spent the weekend tearing my hair out with free PBX. For some reason, I can't seem to get my dial plans right or to be able to make outgoing calls, probably because of the way I've entered something in the interface. Does anyone have any idea which system I could use as an alternative? I want something that's easy to administer, that isn't going to take hours and hours to set up and that essentially works without too much head scratching to work out where you've gone wrong, editing endless config files etc. If it could run on a raspberry Pi, all the better as I have a few lying around. Check out: http://obitalk.com This works in conjunction with the ObiHi hardware devices which connect a phone line to your router.
I'm not sure to what extent they offer a full pbx but they do have business type plans to compliment the free end user oritned service.
In practical terms, I use it to access my Google Voice number using a land line phone connected to the ObiHai device.
Another neat thing is you can remotely provision the ObiHai devices from the http://obitalk.com portal so if a device is at a remote location, you can update its configuration.

So I would have sent you to the Freepbx variants or PBX In a Flash. I found both easy to set up but I was an asterisk geek for a while. You could also look at the 2600 project and look at some of the stuff based on freeswitch but neither of these are highly simple options. For the US the dial plan is as simple as NXXXXXXXXX in the field or 1NXXXXXXXXX depending on what your SIP provider wants to see. Best way is to log in to the unix shell, type asterisk -vvvvr and place a call, capture the call data and look at how the number is formatted as well as the return code that the SIP server provides. Freepbx has become less and less accessible over the years, and (at least for PIAF) Ward’s implementation of things (especially security) tends to break more than it fixes. Have a look at Fusionpbx <http://fusionpbx.com http://fusionpbx.com/>. The developer is active on IRC and cares about accessibility. Also, you can write your own custom dialplans for any special functionality you might need. There’s an unofficial forum at http://fusionpbxforums.com http://fusionpbxforums.com/ as well.

Fusion has a few minor accessibility issues: The “edit” option is labeled with a pencil emoji. VoiceOver reads it but I don’t think NVDA does. The delete link is unlabeled, but it’s right next to edit so easy to find. Everything else is accessible for the most part.

I am using FreePBX. Overall I am not having any access issues with JAWS. Some of the previous version I did. I think the version that my production server is running is 13. Glad to assist anyone with their's.

Hi. Many thanks everyone for your responses. Ideally, I'd like someone who's readily available and able to assist via IM, skype or email. I don't mind continuing to use free PBX, if someone would be willing to test my configuration and/or assist me to troubleshoot. I don't really want to send my cridentials on list for obvious reasons. My preferred provider at the moment in the UK is localphone. They do have an asterisk config guide. I got as far as adding the localphone trunk, and the server was able to register with localphone. But every time I tried making an outgoing call, I just got your call cannot be completed at this time. I couldn't make sense of the console output when using the -rvvv command, perhaps my brain was too aduld by then. I don't know if it was the dial plan. Localphone did say that a string had to be present on outgoing calls, but I wasn't sure where to enter the string they were referring to, or what they meant when they say an outgoing context needs to be created. free PBX terminology doesn't refer to contexts. If they're referring to an outgoing route, where would I enter the information that they provide in the guide? the guide is at: https://www.localphone.com/help/voip/device_guides/softphone/asterisk What I'd also like to do is possibly use 2 different voip providers, 1 for incoming and one for outgoing calls. I like the insecure=very bit. Anyway... What, exactly, have you done here? Freepbx can and does overwrite your configuration if you're not using *_custom.conf files, that may be something. Also, I didn't see anything about a string that needed to be present, am I missing something?

I agree. The order in which you want to configure your system.
1. Inbound and Outbound Trunks. 2. Outbound Routes. 3. Inbound Routes. 4. Extensions.
That is how I do mine right out of the box. If you do asterisk -r at the command line it will show you the console and while you are doing things, it will show the errors on the screen. Don't forget to hit the apply button at the top of the page after the navigation menu or nothing you did will applky. You are welcome to email me off list for further guidance, but my responses may be a bit slow as I have a lot going on.

Many thanks to all of you for your help and advice. After persevering, I managed to get things up and running the way I wanted. It's been a roler coaster ride I don't mind telling you. I got 1 thing working and something else wouldn't work. Got my routes configured a long with my provider then lost audio despite all ports being forwarded. turns out I had to use the public IP setting. that's just 1 example. The amount of times I almost walked away are countless. I have now learned how to configure the system for our needs and have also gotten call recordings and call parking working. recordings are synced every minute to my backup server as well. They could really do with making the software more intuitive in some respects. Someone should provide you with a wizard system that walks you through configuration and deployment. It's a fantastic bit of software and best of all it's totally free. Many thanks once again, if I can help anyone else out let me know. I wouldn't want anyone to go through the frustration I went through. cheers, Mo.

Glad you got it working. If you haven't been around key systems or other types of PBX systems it can be a learning curve. You will find that NAT is very important on the phones if they are not on the same physical network. You will get the hang of it. Their documentation is pretty good I thought.

Localphone did say that a string had to be present on outgoing calls, but I wasn't sure where to enter the string they were referring to, or what they meant when they say an outgoing context needs to be created. free PBX terminology doesn't refer to contexts. This is why I tend to implement phones on IPV6 wherever possible, NAT becomes a non-issue.

Many thanks to all of you for your help and advice. After persevering, I managed to get things up and running the way I wanted. It's been a roler coaster ride I don't mind telling you. I got 1 thing working and something else wouldn't work. Got my routes configured a long with my provider then lost audio despite all ports being forwarded. turns out I had to use the public IP setting. that's just 1 example. The amount of times I almost walked away are countless. I have now learned how to configure the system for our needs and have also gotten call recordings and call parking working. recordings are synced every minute to my backup server as well. They could really do with making the software more intuitive in some respects. Someone should provide you with a wizard system that walks you through configuration and deployment. It's a fantastic bit of software and best of all it's totally free. Many thanks once again, if I can help anyone else out let me know. This is why I tend to implement phones on IPV6 wherever possible, NAT becomes a non-issue.

Many thanks to all of you for your help and advice. After persevering, I managed to get things up and running the way I wanted. It's been a roler coaster ride I don't mind telling you. I got 1 thing working and something else wouldn't work. Got my routes configured a long with my provider then lost audio despite all ports being forwarded. turns out I had to use the public IP setting. that's just 1 example. The amount of times I almost walked away are countless. I have now learned how to configure the system for our needs and have also gotten call recordings and call parking working. recordings are synced every minute to my backup server as well. They could really do with making the software more intuitive in some respects. Someone should provide you with a wizard system that walks you through configuration and deployment. It's a fantastic bit of software and best of all it's totally free. Many thanks once again, if I can help anyone else out let me know. I don’t. We have a Grandstream GXP2160, a Grandstream GXP2140 and 2 grandstream GXP1105s along with an ATA and some softphones. Updating the firmware on the Grandstream phones sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t, lots of hacking around and ultimately I had to upload the firmware from Grandstream’s server to my own so the phones could find them. The phones work well but stay away from Grandstream unless you’re prepared to deal with firmware update headaches!

Fusion has a few minor accessibility issues: The "edit" option is labeled with a pencil emoji. VoiceOver reads it but I don't think NVDA does. The delete link is unlabeled, but it's right next to edit so easy to find. Everything else is accessible for the most part.

I don’t. We have a Grandstream GXP2160, a Grandstream GXP2140 and 2 grandstream GXP1105s along with an ATA and some softphones. Updating the firmware on the Grandstream phones sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t, lots of hacking around and ultimately I had to upload the firmware from Grandstream’s server to my own so the phones could find them. The phones work well but stay away from Grandstream unless you’re prepared to deal with firmware update headaches!

Many thanks to all of you for your help and advice. After persevering, I managed to get things up and running the way I wanted. It's been a roler coaster ride I don't mind telling you. I got 1 thing working and something else wouldn't work. Got my routes configured a long with my provider then lost audio despite all ports being forwarded. turns out I had to use the public IP setting. that's just 1 example. The amount of times I almost walked away are countless. I have now learned how to configure the system for our needs and have also gotten call recordings and call parking working. recordings are synced every minute to my backup server as well. They could really do with making the software more intuitive in some respects. Someone should provide you with a wizard system that walks you through configuration and deployment. It's a fantastic bit of software and best of all it's totally free. Many thanks once again, if I can help anyone else out let me know. I've heard good things about gigaset and yealink phones, never tried them my self though. I have ordered some gigaset phones and will report back re accessibility/useability time permitting. As you say billy, its plain sailing when you get the hang of it, it's just the initial learning curve.

I've heard good things about gigaset and yealink phones, never tried them my self though. I have ordered some gigaset phones and will report back re accessibility/useability time permitting. As you say billy, its plain sailing when you get the hang of it, it's just the initial learning curve.

Many thanks to all of you for your help and advice. After persevering, I managed to get things up and running the way I wanted. It's been a roler coaster ride I don't mind telling you. I got 1 thing working and something else wouldn't work. Got my routes configured a long with my provider then lost audio despite all ports being forwarded. turns out I had to use the public IP setting. that's just 1 example. The amount of times I almost walked away are countless. I have now learned how to configure the system for our needs and have also gotten call recordings and call parking working. recordings are synced every minute to my backup server as well. They could really do with making the software more intuitive in some respects. Someone should provide you with a wizard system that walks you through configuration and deployment. It's a fantastic bit of software and best of all it's totally free. Many thanks once again, if I can help anyone else out let me know. I didn’t think there were a lot of firmware updates from grand stream anyway.
I found it quite easy by just setting option 66 if memory serves with the path to the grand stream server and the updates just happened when they were available. It’s been a while though.

Many thanks to all of you for your help and advice. After persevering, I managed to get things up and running the way I wanted. It's been a roler coaster ride I don't mind telling you. I got 1 thing working and something else wouldn't work. Got my routes configured a long with my provider then lost audio despite all ports being forwarded. turns out I had to use the public IP setting. that's just 1 example. The amount of times I almost walked away are countless. I have now learned how to configure the system for our needs and have also gotten call recordings and call parking working. recordings are synced every minute to my backup server as well. They could really do with making the software more intuitive in some respects. Someone should provide you with a wizard system that walks you through configuration and deployment. It's a fantastic bit of software and best of all it's totally free. Many thanks once again, if I can help anyone else out let me know. I like the insecure=very bit. Anyway... What, exactly, have you done here? Freepbx can and does overwrite your configuration if you're not using *_custom.conf files, that may be something. Also, I didn't see anything about a string that needed to be present, am I missing something?

Fusion has a few minor accessibility issues: The "edit" option is labeled with a pencil emoji. VoiceOver reads it but I don't think NVDA does. The delete link is unlabeled, but it's right next to edit so easy to find. Everything else is accessible for the most part.

You could also look at the 2600 project and look at some of the stuff based on freeswitch but neither of these are highly simple options. For the US the dial plan is as simple as NXXXXXXXXX in the field or 1NXXXXXXXXX depending on what your SIP provider wants to see. Best way is to log in to the unix shell, type asterisk -vvvvr and place a call, capture the call data and look at how the number is formatted as well as the return code that the SIP server provides.
