Considering a windows Storage server

Hi all, This has come up recently ... I'm very fond of the virtualization of servers; I've got two; my web server, and then a domain controller on one physical server, however, I see more benefits than drawbacks to a physical filer as oppose to making my filer another virtual server having to share drive space with databases, web applications, and other things. I'm very picky as to which OS my file server runs, however (preferring windows Storage server, which I can get via mSDN, over anything else) . I was thinking something along the lines of a Western Digital Sentinel or a Dell powerVault, though less emphasis on the latter considering those are the size of a tower. Preferably something desktop-sized or rack-mountable. But I don't want another tower unit hanging around ... or should I just attach a couple of USB 3.0 drives to my current hyper-V host make a dedicated storage space out of them, and then install WSS on a virtual machine?

Maintenance tools in Windows PE vs. live Linux nowadays

Hello all, I don't work as a sys-admin professionally, however I like doing maintenance on my own systems which I have installed on my machine. I'd like to know whether Linux live images continue to be the best tool to put on a USB pen to do maintenance when necessary, or Windows PE is already as good. Is there for example any WinPE image available which comes up talking and contains i.e.: a partitioner as good as Linux GParted, a partition imaging as good as FSArchiver, etc. Also, would it be possible to set the Windows default boot loader to make the PC speaker beep as it's possible with Grub 2? Many departments we support have several systems. These all require their own passwords that expire at different times. They also have different requirements for complexity. For some reason the people who develop policies around these issues feel that it is more secure keeping everything isolated than it is to have the tools in place to synchronise all the login accounts and passwords. The tech guys who are our boots on the ground keep saying that these behaviours have made their jobs a lot easier. When they need to troubleshoot and resolve issues often the person putting in the request is not at their workstation. Because of all the systems being stand alone, it is amazing how often it is possible to find user accounts and passwords on posted notes under people's keyboards. Extremely frustrated! error 500 when using WD sync on nas can anyone help?

Hello Everyone. I have just purchased a western digital nas, model EX2Ultra. I'm liking it in terms of accessibility so far but can't for the life of me get cloud sync to work to sync folders over my local lan which is my primary reason for the purchase. I've enabled cloud access on the device and made sure my user has cloud access enabled. I have not signed up for a my cloud account because every time I click sign up and enter my email and click save, I don't receive any emails from western digital. Do I need to sign up for an online account to use cloud storage? surely I shouldn't need to sign up to use it via a lan? When I install WD sync, the device is detected. I'm prompted to log in and the log in information is accepted. I then get the option to sync folders and by default, my user profile folders are checked. I click continue and at that point, I get the following error. wd sync The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error. Which doesn't tell me anything. Here's what I've done so far. * soft and hard restarted the device multiple times. * reset the device to factory defaults using a full reset. * Tried to contact western digital. I've received 2 confirmation emails which tell me to send them system logs and that the case is open, but no reply from them so far. * Tried adding other user accounts, same error. * Tried installing on another machine on the same lan, same error. Does anyone have any idea what's going on and why the server would be throwing an error 500? It doesn't really tell anyone anything. The dashboard is working fine. all the best, Mo.

Mcafee SIEM and EPO

Hello Folks Has anyone any experience using Mcafee SIEM and / or EPO ? SIEM is a security manager, and EPO is an e-policy orchestrator. In particular, are they accessible ? I have no useful sight. Experience using JAWS / NVDA and orca. Interview coming up next week, with a company that uses these products. All input much appreciated. Thanks, Paul
