I've had good luck with the G930 7.1 Wireless Gaming Headset from Logitech. It has a small USB dongle which shows up as an additional sound card. The microphone works well enough in case using a softphone is an option. The battery is not removable, but the headset can be used while charging. I usually charge it if I'm going to be away from the computer or if I'll be sitting next to it for a while. RDP with speech?

All, I've got a couple of MSWindows boxes to talk to over RDP. I come from the linux world where other methods are standard but those methods aren't available for this project. I see that NVDA has an RDP plugin, but is that the way to go? Is there a solution that is more linux focused? Thanks in advance! --Will

Decent wireless headset.

Hello, Not strictly on topic for this list but in a round about way it is very relevant. I've just broken my lovely Zenhizer head set. I've had this for about three years. I use this headset for Jaws only. I've a few sound cards in this machine for various reasons. One is dedicated to Jaws speech. I'm looking for a new headset. Any recommendations? I had a wireless headset eight years ago. It lasted me about five years but I got sick of the battery constantly going down. I even bought two batteries for it but if I was working on something for a very long time and the battery went down and I kept working on the second battery, the first battery didn't have time to recharge before the battery in use went down. It would seem strange to some but sitting on a computer for up to 20 hours isn't an uncommon thing for me some days. That's the joy of working full time, keeping up with new technology and also keeping my own business going all at the same time. I would love it if this headset would also let me hear the phone as well. It's a Cisco VOIP phone. There's nothing as frustrating as trying to talk to someone with the handset pressed up to my ear with my shoulder and jaws talking on the other side. I currently have an incredibly cheap wired headset for the phone but the desk can get a bit crazy with wires all over the place. I'm of two minds to go with wireless or not. I gave up on it after a lot of years of frustration as I said eight years ago but maybe things have come a long way since then. Any suggestions? Hello, I'm trying to fix a win7 pro machine that keeps entering a boot loop. The 7 startup repair comes up, tries to repair then says it can't fix. I've tried googling this and have come up with two commands which might work: bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot I'm wondering if this is something that can be made to talk perhaps via a PE? I'd appreciate any other suggestions to fix this. I'd rather not have to reinstall. Thanks. Dave.

I find that I don't get a huge amount of time to study during the week but I love that I can dip in to different courses when ever I get a few minutes on the bus or train, while trying to take a break during lunch or when just thinking about something that I'd like to work on. So far, I've listened to courses on powershell, SQL, visual studio, ASP.net and MVC. I haven't listened to anything from start to finish but it's given me a some key information when I've needed it. For example, I've been scripting in Powershell for a while but I never really realized how brilliant the help system was until I listened to the Lynda video on Powershell last week. For a person working in tech this is becoming one of my most valuable resources. Well worth the money I payed for the subscription. Regards Darragh

My sincere thanks to the moderator for allowing me to post the following. Having introduced a long-standing friend who is totally blind to a developer, he desperately needs a fully legal copy of Visual Studio 2008 Professional or Enterprise. There is a bug in later versions of V.S. which affects the ability to add break points when developing add-ons for MS Word. Net result of course being that stepping through code is impossible. Does anyone have a copy they wish to dispose of? I'm NOT asking for anything free, and happy to pay a reasonable price. Building Windows VMs and provisioning them with NVDA?

Hi all, I have been trying to build a Windows7 VM with packer and Vagrant, but it sits for ages and doesn't seem to get past the boot stage. I want to do this, so that I can provision them with NVDA, then connect with NVDA remote. Currently the VSphere version my company use for creating VMs for testing, does not allow us to add sound cards (or at least it looks that way). Some basic testing I did with NVDARemote, indicates to me that you will at least need a sound card in the other machine, but I have not looked in to this in detail. Anyway, if anyone has experience with using Packer to build Windows VMs, or has an adapted Packer File that may be of more use for my particular case, I would really appreciate some help and advice. When travelling in an aircraft I found that bone conduction headphones didn't work very well for me. There is too much external noise from the engines and ventilation system. It overwhelms the sound coming from the bone conduction headphones. When I use earbuds on an aircraft it is amazing how loud they are. I notice this when I am no longer on the aircraft and use them without adjusting the volume first. Noise cancelling headphones on an aircraft work very well for me. It is amazing how much noise they cancel out during the flight. I even notice while wearing them, I can even understand the flight attendants when they are speaking to me. This is generally if I am listening to a book, checking email or reading text. If I am listening to music it is more difficult to hear anything else, because of the wider range of sound. Bone conduction headphones work nicely at work and around the house while I'm puttering. Even while outside I like them. If I am not in an area where there is a lot of traffic noise I like using them with a GPS solution. In noisier environments I find using an ear peace like the Jabra Supreme works well. It has noise cancelling and I find unlike an earbud it doesn't get sucked into my ear canal blocking out a lot of sound. In fact although it does alter my hearing somewhat while out and about, it is no worse than wearing a toque during the winter. I found it very easy to get used to and it also works nicely when I receive a call when I'm on the move. The closest items I found that work OK for me while outside are the earbuds Apple sends with their iPhones and other iDevices. The only thing I can surmise is that because they have a hard shell there is no soft rubber or foam to seal my ear canal. I have resisted the temptation to use earbuds during the day at work. This is purely anecdotal, but a friend did tell me when he used to use earbuds the rate of ear infections for him seemed to increase. Using earbuds that didn't have foam coverings although easier to keep clean, didn't help. Moving to external headphones resolved his issues. As for leaking, I noticed that the second generation of Bluetooth Aftershokz worked better. They have larger transducers, better sound and less leaks. I haven't used their latest offering yet. Vic
