accidental discovery

I use open ssh for windows to admin our linux servers. Openssh runs in a windows command window like Windows DOS. But I always had problems with it when running a curses program like the linux kernel config program or debconf. But I accidently discovered last night that nvda works really well in a command window in full screen mode. Jaws doesn't work at all in a command window in full screen mode. But nvda works really well. You don't have to have openssh to try it yourself. Start nvda, open a command window and pressalt+enter. That will put the command window in full screen mode. You'll still be able to hear nvda. If you try it with jaws (at least as of jaws 9), all you'll get is the key echo. When I discovered this last night, I sshed to my linux server at home and went into the kernel configuration program. It was pretty nice. Then I reconfigured exim4 via debconf. So it worked really well. Best Windows terminal emulation I'm aware of. And free too, of course.

Take a look at the HP MSA. The web admin is useless cause it refreshes all the time, but you can ssh in and use a CLI. Juniper V. Cisco

Any one else finding the gear coming out of Juniper more interesting than Cisco lately or actually for a while? I'm working on a big migration from Cisco / Foundry to Juniper and the Junos side is so much more flexable. I like the whole BSD vibe on the Juniper gear. They have really good version control for example and you can tell that's all based on a subversion back end with a wrapper. Recovering a corrupted OS is all about mount_msdosfs /dev/das1, copy your image to the temp directory and then add / reboot, bam! It's very clean and familiar some how. I guess I like products that use Unix environments as their OS, Checkpoint on Solaris was another example. I also like the fact that a gigabit interface for example can pass a gigabit's worth of normal traffic instead of say 300 megabits like your average Cisco product. Anyone else having a similar experience? What are other vendors doing interesting things. How are the Juniper security products? I will say I do like the Cisco ASA 5500 series. The whole group construction and policy / tunnel phase 1 / 2 thing is clever. I'm not inspired by what Cisco is doing in routing and switching though. Any other vendors that should be considered?

free sshfs client for Windows?

Anybody have a recommendation for a free sshfs program fro Windows? I personally use ExpandDrive and consider it worth every penny of the registration cost. However, I'm writing a howto for my department and I know some people will not want to pay.

anyone using a mac to do their job?

So I'm do for a laptop refresh at work and they have decided to give me the option of a new I7 Mac. Is Voice Over ready for the job site? How does it work with things like ssh, rt tracker via http, and what about this windows under parallels thing? I keep hearing about VM fusion. Anyone who could give me a primer I'd really appreciate it. What's the ideal configuration I should shoot for? Thank you Scott

vmware workstation 6.5

All, I know this is a long shot but is anyone still using vmware 6.5 for linux? I recently upgraded my kernel to 2.6.32 and now I can't get the vmware monitor kernel module to compile. I'm looking for hints & tips as to how to figure out why it won't compile. I've looked in the logs in /tmp but there doesn't seem to be any error messages there. I presume there are error messages on screen but I can't see them and orca won't read them because the compile is run as root. I know from past experience that instead of running vmware as a regular user and giving it the root password to compile, you can instead open a terminal window and run vmware as root. It then starts compiling the modules and you get access to the compiler messages. I did that and it seemed to work. Only when I run vmware, it still wants to compile and install the vmmon module. Vmware still runs and I have even created a virtual machine (I think). But the machine won't run without the vmmon module. You can open a gnome terminal window and type 'su

Off Line storage

all. I wish to set up a off line Linux server that I can manage that has a higher band width than what I can get normally. This will permit me to store files remotely and provide access to family/friends so we can share photo's and family material. So I am looking for something that is cheap. If I hav to provide the hard disks, that is fine. If I have to provide the PC. well, I can do that but it is going to be more difficult. If it is all virtual, that is fine. I want to have a SSH logging to this box. Any ideas? Sean
