Ryan, wow, that really is pretty impressive. I think I will try Workstation out a bit. I have a MAPS subscription so I have a few choices as to Windows operating systems to experiment with. But, the Easy Install feature supports Windows and Linux guests that I know of. You can use a CD, DVD or ISO image, and its just the normal immage. It uses defaults for everything else, you're in a workgroup, etc. I've not installed SBS2003, I did try 2008 though. VMWare thought it was regular 2008, but got enough installed that I could use Narrator and get speech for the SBS specific part. It's a really good product, and actually offers some features that would benefit a blind person. The biggest being when you create a new VM, you can point Workstation at the ISO image or CD of the OS you will use to install your VM, and Workstation will detect the OS and install it automatically, as well as load the appropriate version of VMWare tools. You can literly run through the new VM wizard, power on your VM, come back in a few minutes and have a working, with sound, virtual machine ready for screen reader installation. A very big deal in my book. If Workstation is still to expensive, give Player a look. Right now it will only read virtual machines made in Workstation, but my understanding is the next release will be more of a free Workstation light than just Player. Frank, I'll write more later when I'm at an actual computer. But, the Easy Install feature supports Windows and Linux guests that I know of. You can use a CD, DVD or ISO image, and its just the normal immage. Once you point Workstation at the install media, it asks for a product key (on Windows), your full name and the admin password. It uses defaults for everything else, you're in a workgroup, etc. I've not installed SBS2003, I did try 2008 though. VMWare thought it was regular 2008, but got enough installed that I could use Narrator and get speech for the SBS specific part. Ryan, thanks. I may give Hyper-V a look at some point in time but after reading your post about Workstation I think I may want to investigate that first. There's no sound emulation in HyperV or VMWare, mainly because these products are designed to emulate servers and be used in data center environments where you wouldn't have local access to the server anyway. VMWare's desktop products, Workstation and Player, both do sound emulation. Microsoft's Virtual PC does as well, but the latest Virtual PC basically uses an RDP connection to give you access to the VM, so its sound support isn't as relyable as VMWare's, but its good enough. Actually in the IT world I know, HyperV has gotten a look because its free, but most of the IT people I know once they look at HyperV closely don't think it compares well to VMWare's ESX product, or even the free ESXI product. I think its more that HyperV is new in the market compared to VMWare, so has to catch up more. In a few years I'm sure it will be there, but most people I've talked to say its just not mature enough for production yet. Hi Ryan, I was not aware that you can point Workstation at a CD (can it be a DVD?) and it will do an automated install of the OS. Does the ISO Image or CD have to have the unattended install file on it or can it just be the usual factory retail install CD. If I crate a VM in workstation on physical machine x, can I just move it over to physical machine y and have it work, like I can with VPC's .VHD files? What operating systems are supported for that automated install trick? Where can I find this documented? I the case of something like Microsoft's SBS if I pointed Workstation at the DVD how far into the instllation does it get? How would it know what the domain and local machine names should be? It's a really good product, and actually offers some features that would benefit a blind person. The biggest being when you create a new VM, you can point Workstation at the ISO image or CD of the OS you will use to install your VM, and Workstation will detect the OS and install it automatically, as well as load the appropriate version of VMWare tools. You can literly run through the new VM wizard, power on your VM, come back in a few minutes and have a working, with sound, virtual machine ready for screen reader installation. A very big deal in my book. If Workstation is still to expensive, give Player a look. Right now it will only read virtual machines made in Workstation, but my understanding is the next release will be more of a free Workstation light than just Player. Honestly on the whole I'm very pleased with VMWare's products. The VIC needs some work, but on a technical standpoint they're very sound. I'd honestly much rather see scripts for the VIC, because while you can still navigate with the mouse, it takes a lot longer for a blind person than it would for a sighted person to perform similar tasks. I added a lot of functionality to Workstation to get information from the Summary dialogs (Alt + S), and navigate around this multi-page Summary dialog. Move to the list in the dialog with Alt + D. With several complex functions that the user is unaware of, it is possible to Tab around this dialog and get to all of the controls. The tree view in the optional Sidebar is I think, the best way to check tree status of all Virtual Machines. Again, there are a few functions that automatically report the status as you arrow up and down in the tree view. A few things I could not decide, since I am not a power user. 1. VMware normally does not place the focus anywhere in the application. Where is the best place to force the application to focus? I started writing a function, PlaceFocus, to determine which window was active and place the focus in an appropriate place. After using the application a little and attempting to magnify the screen enough to somewhat understand the layout, I might want to change that concept. A simpler approach would be to require that the Sidebar is enabled and place the focus on the Running and Favorites tree view in the Sidebar. It currently forces this focus when opening or switching to Workstation (AutoStartEvent) and when using Control + Tab (NexVMWindow) to switch between VM windows. What do you think? 2. In the VMware player, I added a script to start the selected VM in the Recently Opened VM list when the Enter key is pressed. I have not decided what action to take if the Enter key is pressed on a VM in the Running and Favorites tree view. There is a script for the Enter key, SelectVM, that can perform what we choose. It currently moves the focus to the Device Details list view on the Summary dialog. 3. I have debug SayMessage statements that help locate an issue if one arises. Most users should never be aware they are there. To make it easier to enable when needed, i have added the required lines in the jCF file. Since the JSX packager will not carry over comment lines whemn merging JCF files. I needed another approach. There are two choices. I currently have the Debug statements enabled when verbosity is set to Advanced. This of course, might piss off people who normally have verbosity set to addvanced! Anither option would be to have all 0's in the line below so that Debug statements are disabled until you open the JCF file in an text editor and change the appropriate 0 to a 1. Which do you think is best? [OutputModes] ; Will speak all of the OT_DEBUG messages when in Advanced Verbosity DEBUG=0|0|1|DEBUG Message There are a few minor things I need to fix, such as not being able to get back to the Summary dialog if you navigate to a optional Tab like "Package" that does not have a list view. I have not added logic yet to catch every strange situation such as the Sidebar not being present or in full screen. These are not difficult, but the questions above need to be decided.
