VPN - L2TP and the Virgin Hub 3 (and perhaps BT)

If you do not use VPN - hit delete now. Having installed a new Server running Windows Server 2016, our latest problem has been VPN communication from home to the office. PPTP worked just fine, but Server 2016's Best Practices Advisor (BPA) said that we should be using a higher level of security communication. Setting up L2TP, the minimum advised, failed. I'll spare those details for now, but if you try and fail, and also have Virgin's Hub 3, forget it. It simply will not ever work - officially. There is a solution, but that involves purchasing a router (a wireless one if you need that too), at your own expense, to connect to the Virgin Hub 3. You then have to configure the Hub 3 as a Modem, and go from there. Virgin did once support L2TP, but they have removed the option. The Virgin user lists are full of IT managers who, since at least January this year, are complaining the their home workers have the problem, and that they are forced to open the PPTP server option. And if you have the same with British Telecom, do not be surprised if you have the same problem. A colleague needing access to our server contacted BT, and the two support people he spoke to in Delhi (or was it Bombay), did not even know what L2TP was. He solved it himself but I don't have details. With Internet Security a top priority, especially for businesses, I am staggered about this! George.

Accessible TOTP tools

Several Web sites that I use offer Time-Based One-Time Passwords (TOTP - RFC 6238) as the second factor in a two-factor authentication scheme. To manage TOTP and to create the six-digit time-based codes that need to be entered during the authentication process, I'm using oathtool under Linux, which is excellent: it's a command line tool, and one can easily write a shell script to generate the codes. I've tried FreeTOTP under iOS, but it isn't very accessible. What other tools (for various operating systems) have you found useful for this purpose?

My ideal setup would be to run a really simple Linux desktop with no GUI on this workstation and fire up VM's for my guest machines but when I've tried to do this, I encounter too many issues with performance even on a really beefy system. Many of these performance issues seem to be perceived and not actually happening. I'm perceiving them because the screen reader I'm using is lagging just slightly behind me compared to standard use. This really well written article suggests ways around this but I'm not sure if I'm going to invest the time into researching it's suitability for my particular situation. https://blog.bryansmart.com/2012/02/16/low-latency-sound-for-vmware/ I use Windows 10 for everything from system administration, .net development, testing and audio editing. I want Linux at the core because when it's just running the console, it just works. I've never had a Linux system fail on me for software reasons when it's just running for this purpose. If I'm using virtual machines, I can easily create and restore from snapshots when needed. The workstation is a strong spec: 2 8 core Xeon processors: 64GB RAM A high speed SSD RAID Array system that I really don't understand. It's using 2 SSD disks enclosed in one case with a RAID controller. I've one 1TB SSD data disk Then another few 2TB data disks. Just for the fun of it, there's an Nvidia Geforce GTX970 graphics card Finally a Sound blaster ZXR DB Pro card I built this machine for the purpose of running VM's but for various reasons, it's never really been able to do it. Mainly because of screen reader issues.

Hey all, I love this thing (I actually use it for personal tech projects; wish it were used at my job) though it's got some major accessibility issues; namely that the desktop client works with neither JAWS nor NVDA, and in the wweb client,, you can't make one to one video calls unless using JAWS for some stupid reason. Enterprise Password Management

Hello everyone, My school is starting to look into an enterprise password management solution. Since I will have to support and also use it, wanted to know if anyone had any experiences with any of them with screen readers. Both good and bad. Some of the venders we're looking at: Thycotic, Cyberark, Entrify, One Identity. Most look like they are web interfaces which of course can range widely when it comes to accessibility. Hello Listers, I'd like to know, would it be possible to officially configure a PE with Narrator preinstalled? I've tried finding documentation in the windows ADK 1703 but have found nothing concerning Narrator. Currently, we boot from the network to install a preconfigured OS, where booting from the network and selecting an OS is not accessible to me at this moment. I could use an unattend option, for now, but I'd like to know if there are other methods? Secondly, as part of support, we often have to help users remotely. I have seen a few threads here concerning NVDA remote and team viewer, but I'm not sure how to setup a working solution. Are there any guides available please? I've noticed that they also make use of remote desktop. Would NVDARemote still work for this program as well? Or would it be better to install jaws and make use of Tandom? Lastly, If I were to place a portable copy of NVDA on a share and run it when I help various people, as aposed to always carrying a flash around, Is there a commandline option to be able to run NVDA as an administrator?\ I apologize for the beginner questions. Starting NVDA or Narrator from command prompt or power shell?

Hi everyone, I am still on my quest to be able to set up a Windows Box with Vagrant, that is provisioned with NVDA and that will provide some sort of speech output once the provisioner has run. I have now managed to get the provisioner to run on a Windows10 box, after messing about with 'winrm' for a while. This script installs the NVDA package using 'choco'. I don't think it's the latest but better than nothing. However NVDA does not automatically start once the package is installed. Note currently I don't have access to a physical box running Windows that I can test stuff out on. I am looking for a way to start either NVDA or Narrator from the command prompt or power shell, so I can at least get some feedback. I have tried going to the VM GUI and using the NVDA short cut key as a quick work-around, but nothing seemed to happen. Also as I am being lazy and not building my own Vagrant box, a quick way to enable Audio if it is disabled is appreciated. I think it is available on the box I have, but I may play with different Windows boxes in the future. Thanks in advance for any suggestions, Jen!

Windows Subsystem for Linux: copying/pasting accessibly in the terminal

The Windows Subsystem for Linux doesn't provide keyboard commands for copying or pasting text into its terminal, which is not the same as the PowerShell console (for example, it supports full terminal emulations for ncurses applications). See the GitHub issue at https://github.com/Microsoft/BashOnWindows/issues/235 I hope this is prioritized and fixed. Meanwhile, does anyone here have a work-around?
