I have one of those that you slide the cd in. For something that just plays cds, it has a lot of buttons on it. It was given to us, and the person said it was a Plextor. Good to hear from you. My wife's PTN1 only plays CD's, so it cannot be used for anything else. Its position in her listening system is going to be taken up by a PTX1, which plays CD's, S D cards, and memory sticks. She has had the PTX1 for some time, but has hardly used it, so it will now come into its own. Keep well. Hi Peter I have exactly the same problem with my PTR1. I wrote to this list some while ago, and various suggestions were made, none of which worked. I gather this is a discontinued line now, and I wonder if this problem occurred on many machines. I can still play and record on a CF card, so I am not binning mine yet. When any kind of disc is inserted, it plays the tune for a while, then says improper or damaged disc, and then ejects the disc. I have tried all the re-initialisation procedures I can think of, and even removed the battery, but I am still getting the same results. Is it time to bin it? Thanks Marc for your prompt response. I have a CD cleaning disc, which I put into the machine, but it has not helped. It looks as though this machine will go to the great talking book library in the sky. My wife has a PTX1, and two PTR2 machines, so we will move some machines around so there is one to replace the one that has broken. Best wishes, Peter

Hi Peter, This is most likely due to a defective CD-ROM drive. Unfortunately, this model is no longer available. You can dismount the CD-drive, open it and try to clean the reading lens, but no guarantee this will work.
