BitLocker or TrueCrypt for thumb drive encryption
by David Mehler 26 Aug '13

26 Aug '13

Hello, Does anyone encrypt their thumb drives? I do for traveling purposes, if I'm going through an airport security point if I loose one the finder only gets a thumb drive not my data. Previously I've used TrueCrypt but have just learned BitLocker in 7 pro and up can also do this. Does anyone have any opinions pro or conn for a comparison between BitLocker and TrueCrypt? Thanks. Dave.

windows 8 self install for the blind
by Isaac 12 Aug '13

12 Aug '13

Hi, if anyone is interested, I can give full instructions on how to install windows 8 with out sighted assistance, and with out using a silly live disk, and also how to create and restore system images as a complete guide, if interested please say so on the list and I'll be happy to help. This is a pretty much fool proof method, and can also be used to install windows 7 and xp multi boot right a long side windows 8. I can also bring back windows mail in windows 8, although some discourage this because you have to use files from windows 7 and vista, but it works flawlessly. We can also get back sapi four voices in windows 8 and the windows 7 sounds and so much more, so if you guys need help, I've been working on this for a while and am ready to share. Thanks: isaac

win7 power and not waking up with wireless keyboard or mouse
by David Mehler 10 Aug '13

10 Aug '13

Hello, I've got a new win7 64 bit machine. It's not working power wise, when it goes to sleep, it does not shut down it's fans, nor can I get wireless devices, I've got a wireless keyboard/mouse attached to it, and neither will wake it up. Currently, i've got a usb wired mouse hooked up and it takes that to get it to come back. I was thinking it has something to do with the system's power plan, and not sure why though it won't shut down fans, nor why wired keyboards and mice can get it to wake up, but wireless same can not. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. Dave.

grml from usb
by David Mehler 07 Aug '13

07 Aug '13

Hello, I've got a system relatively new that my grml 2011.05 CD doesn't like. I'm getting an error about mount squashfs does not exist. I'm assuming my hardware is either to new, or 64 bit system and a 32 bit disk. In any case it isn't working. I am downloading the grml96 2013.02 iso and I'm going to write it to a usb stick. To those who have done this I'm wanting to use grml2usb so I can pass some boot parameters to the process. I do have a virtual machine running Ubuntu 12.04 so hopefully can run the grml2usb from that. Comments so far? What I'm wanting to know is is the option swspeak still available from the boot prompt in the latest 2013.02 iso for loading speakup with software speech? If so i'd like to pass that as a boot option so that I will get automatic speech. Comments welcome. Thanks. Dave.
