Anyone work for an ISP / carrier and want to sell some services?
by Scott Granados 20 Aug '09

20 Aug '09

Hi, I'm looking for 100 megabits of transit (preferably over Metro E) in the San Francisco SOMA area if anyone is interested in selling it to me. Not sure if anyone else here works for a large enough ISP or carrier to fill this kind of request but I'd rather toss money towards a familiar company and help one of us out. Anyone who might be able to fill this contact me off list. I also need pipe in Bentonville AR (3 to 9 megabits) if anyone can fill it. Thanks Scott

Question about using JFW with putty
by Scott Granados 17 Aug '09

17 Aug '09

Hi, so here's the issue. I use putty as an SSH client. In order for me to hear the output I have to do an insert s to speak all. This works but when the screen fills it rereads the entire screen over and over again for each new line added. What's up with that? Secure CRT has a script written that gets around this. What can I do to use putty or is there a better (preferably free) client to use that's more jaws friendly? Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks Scott

Does anyone here have experience with System Center Configuration Manager
by Ryan Shugart 14 Aug '09

Hi: There's a chance I might be taking over my company's System Center Configuration Manager implementation in the next few months, and was wondering if anyone's used it and can speak from the standpoint of accessibility how usable it is. I presume its just a bunch of MMCs so it shouldn't be a problem but it never hurts to check. Also, as someone who'se never touched SCCM before and only knows in general what it does, any good online training and documentation resources out there? Thanks. Ryan

Re: [Blind-sysadmins] networking issue

Hi Dave, Yes move the second network onto the 192.168.2.x subnet, then that will give room for ICS to use 192.168.0.x. As far as I remember, that IP range in ICS is no negociable. Ad-hoc wifi means setting up wifi using two wifi cards, unlike the system that uses access points. I only did it once and it took ages, I had to use the wifi client by the nic manufacturer and not the builtin one in Windows. Second thing, where is internet connection sharing? My brain mushed out and i can't remember where it is. Ad-hoc WiFi issues, is that like the wireless network not being immediately available on system boot, takes a minute, i know about that one, i tried to set up a map network drive script it kept failing since the network wasn't up at the time. It will be possible to use Internet Connection sharing, though you will have to reset the IP address on the router to anything apart from 192.168.0.x, because that is what the ICS software will assign by default. You will also have to deal with ad-hoc wifi issues. Thanks. I've got DSL with a dsl modem and a wireless router. I've got one machine that's far enough away so that running a wire isn't practical, hence the reason the wireless router, and a second machine even further away. Both of these machines are within wireless range. The machine that's closer to the wireless router has two nics in it, the wireless one which connects up to the network and a regular rj45 internal. I had the thought that i could assign the wired nic a static ip then use network connection sharing to allow the computer further away to share the machine's internet connection. The two computers are connected by a switch. My problem is that whenever the wired card is up, meaning it has an ip, the wireless card won't see the gateway, which is 192.168.0.1, take out the cable and refresh the dhcp lease on the wireless card and the gateway once again returns. The wireless card has an address on the 192.168.0.x range and i'm statically assigning the wired nic an address on that subnet though outside the dhcp server's lease. Both machines are running xp pro. This might or might not be related to this issue, more than likely it's a symptom of the same issue. I want to map network drives on startup, so i loaded in a drive mapping script in the system's user configuration section of the local profile. A wired nic it would have worked, since it's going wireless i am getting the error "No network provider was able to validate the path". Any suggestions. Thanks. anyone running a postfix mail server or a web server outside the U.S.?
by Dave 11 Aug '09

11 Aug '09

Hello, I've got two questions on different servers. The simple one first, does anyone have a web server outside the U.S. I could host on? I'm going through a legal issue, one that will impact all blind individuals negatively if i am not successful, and I need to raise awareness of it. To do this i have chosen to do internet hosting. I'm aware that the U.S. government can under certain circumstances via a court order force a hosting provider to remove a site, I'm expecting this, therefor i want to host on a server outside the U.S. This will not be for anything illegal, I want to ensure the voice on my issue can not be silenced. I will do all the work, I just need server space. Second question, is anyone running a postfix email server? If so, what antispam measures are you utilizing? I'm trying to get postfix, amavisd-new, spamassassin, clamav, and postgrey to play together on a Centos machine. For the most part i have it, although i keep getting mails addressed to mailman.$mydomain which i am not sure of. I want to tighten up my spamassassin configuration and have questions on the rules files, updating them and increasing or decreasing scores. Thanks. Dave.

does anyone else hate the trend to web GUIs in network equipment?
by Scott Granados 06 Aug '09

06 Aug '09

I'm a little disturbed by a trend in network hardware where everything has to have a web front end to configure. Even gear like the Cisco ASA has this totally inaccessible java based ASDM thingy that sucks on a whole new level. (even to sited users) What's happening to the command line? It's so much better and more efficient for working with network elements and frankly for servers. Everyone tell your Cisco reps that this is a bad thing. (tm)
