strange message
by Philip 21 Apr '09

21 Apr '09

I recently added a client computer to the domain. Now, whenever the person logs on, a message pops up that says fAIL Note the case of the letters. there is absolutely nothing else on the screen. I have performed numerous searches, but none of the search engines will let me do a case sensitive search. Does anyone have any ideas where this message might be coming from, and how to eliminate it? Thanks. Phil

issue with zip files automatically opening
by Dave 18 Apr '09

18 Apr '09

Hello, I've run in to a strange problem. I've got an xp Home machine that i'm working on, that when a zip file is clicked on no file download dialog box comes up the file is background downloaded and automatically opened. The machine is running ie7, has no viruses, and this issue occurs with add-ons loaded and when i run IE without any add-ons. I've googled compressed (zipped folders) for anything on this, didn't find anything, and checked 7zip, as this machine has that on it as well, again nothing. It is running the google toolbar but not sure if that's relevant. The zip file extension is the only extension that exhibits this behavior. The files are coming from a https server running apache 2.2.x if that is relevant. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks. Dave. David Mehler (MCSA 2003, MCP, Network+, A+) dave.mehler(a)gmail.com

terminal servers and sharepoint?
by Dave 18 Apr '09

18 Apr '09

Hello, I might have a position where i have to interact with a terminal server, possibly installing apps or setting permissions to it, and or sharepoint, which i have very limited experience with. I was wondering if anyone had access to these? My screen reader for day to day use is jfw 10, though i do have NVDA on a thumb drive for situations where i have to go to a box for work and the machine doesn't have jfw and narrator won't do it. Advice or suggestions or if anyone has one i could check out i'd appreciate it. Thanks. Dave. David Mehler (MCSA 2003, MCP, Network+, A+) dave.mehler(a)gmail.com

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had setup and was using windows server update services v3.0sp1? I was using 2, then the update to 3 happened and it's wizard seems very unaccessible. I was wondering if anyone had workarounds? This is with jfw9. Thanks. Dave.

jfw/zoomtext and vpn
by Philip 03 Apr '09

03 Apr '09

I hope someone can shed some light on a potential problem I am shortly going to run into. We are currently running a fileserver that holds user home folders as well as shared documents. The server also hosts the license servers for jfw and zoomtext along with some other similar license servers. unfortunately, it was originally purchased with only 1 hard drive which is running out of space. The server is also almost 4 years old. The server is our primary domain controller, dns server, and vpn server. We recently purchased a new server, with raid 5 disks, more ram, more processors and the like. I have set it up to take over some of the functions of the older server. I want to transfer the roll of file server to it and transfer the vpn roll over to it as well. I believe all I have to do is change the port forwarding within our router to forward port 1723 to the new server. The question is though, if I do this, how will the client computers still be able to access the license servers on the old server. in other words, client computers will access their files on the new server via a vpn connection, but if so, I assume they will no longer be able to receive a license authorization from (say jfw license server) from the old server. I hope this makes sense, and I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I also am hoping that I don't have to move the license servers to the new server if at all possible. Many thanks. Phil
