Windows 7 Copy Oddity-Possibly seen in Vista as well?
by Barry Toner 28 Mar '09

28 Mar '09

I am attempting to copy a data backup from a USB SATTA Caddy to a USB Caddy drive. Using Windows 7 and Windows Explorer the copy calculates the source size and targets free space then gives me a dialog with try Again and Cancel claiming there's not enough free space on the drive to perform the copy. I need to free up about 80GB or so on the target. There's no options for replace files whilst copying in this instance it seems. NB. The source is a few gig smaller than the target's overall directory and the targets volume has 146GB free. My next step was installed Windows Resource Kits Tools with the intention of using robocopy. The installer did warn me of known conflicts but I thought, push on and see. When i try and execute robocopy it generates a bunch of on-screen garbage and lands me back in the c:\program files\windows resource kits\tools directory. I don't want to delete the target because it has some newer files than the source. However, one way i could work round it is copy the target to the source, delete the target then copy the source to what was the target, it seems very long-winded and wil take probably an additional six hours because this is USB to USB, both powered and USB 2.0, but still will take a while. Any suggestions for an alternative? I could probably use rsync, but don't want to drag this out as I'd have to read-up on it's syntax as it's been a few years. Thanks, Barry. __________ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 3957 (20090324) __________ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. http://www.eset.com

text editor that handles multiple line edits
by Dave 27 Mar '09

27 Mar '09

Hello, I'm not sure if the subject is entirely accurate, but i'm looking for a new Windows text editor something with notepad's speed but with multiple line editing, a mark ability or a search and replace. For example, I've got a document converted from a word doc, with the original source unavailable, that has headers and footers in it. I want to strip those out. I was thinking of marking text then deleting everything between the marks, or a multiple line search and replace. Suggestions for an editor welcome. Thanks. Dave. packaging virtual machines
by rick watson 18 Mar '09

Good morning list, I have a vm that was created using virtual server. Does anyone know if it is possible to package this machine up for distribution to other people. I realize that one could simply copy all of the files, but this seems rather a large bit of data. Thanks Rick

Hi, It looks like the new JFW 10.1 will support Windows Server 2008 64-bit. Anyone got any kit to try this on? My systems are all virtual and I don't have a remote desktop license. Thanks. Andrew.

Good afternoon listers, I just found this list. I am currently working with Microsoft virtual pc 2007 and jaws. I have created a second virtual hard disk using the virtual disk wizard and set the second disk in my virtual machine to point to it. Why doesn't this disk show up under my computer. ip kvm switches
by Philip 07 Mar '09

07 Mar '09

Has anyone had any experience using ip kvm switch that also passes audio? I need to admin 2 servers from a different building. I am not impressed with using jaws and remote desktop. System access works most of the time, but version 3 doesn't play nice with 3rd party screen readers. I sometimes need to use the jaws cursor for some tasks, and the virtual mouse in system access is a joke. At the moment, i have a four port usb/audio switch on my desk witht he servers in the same room. In April, the servers are moving to a different building. The buildings are going to be connected using fiber. If necessary, I can have a cat 5 cable pulled too, if cat5 kvm would work. >From the little I was able to find, ip kvm switches seem to send back a bit map for the video. Any help will be appreciated. Phil
