Windows 7 Installation
by Frank Ventura 09 Jan '09

09 Jan '09

Hello all, I am most likely going to download the beta of Windows 7 from Microsoft this weekend. Can anyone tell me if there is a unattended install available for this upcoming version of Windows or will I need a pair of eyes to install it? Any differences in the installation procedure from a blindness perspective? Thanks Frank Ventura, MCP

Hi folks, I just wanted to thank everyone who helped with my problem setting up the Dell SAS5ir RAID controller. In the end I ran the Dell server setup utility again and the third time was a charm. The only thing is I wish I knew why since I really didn't do anything different then the second time. You need to download the 5.5.0 DVD ISO (assuming you have a DVD rom drive), and the ISO containing the firmeware updates. The firmware update DVD can be used in Windows or from within the systems management bootable disk. If you have a CD drive only then you need to download an older version of the software, 5.3, again it is on the same page. I also tried reinstalling the OS in a RAID 1 configuration, as opposed to the RAID 0 I tried last time. The same thing happened. There are two 250gb drives in the array. Disk management reports the C partition as being 231.8gb, which would be correct (this being the "DM disk view in disk management). The properties of the C drive as reported by Windows Explorer shows the capacity as 5gb and I cannot use any of the rest of the space (226 or so GB). I found the drivers for the Dell 5ir controller on the support.dell.com site. I installed them with no difference. I could not find the ISO image of the latest Dell setup disk. After identifying it as a SC440 and a 5IR controller I don't see any links to disk images. I was thinking of installing the drivers onto a floppy and hitting F6 after booting from the Windows disk. How can I set up the drivers on the floppy or can I just copy the .exe files onto the floppy? Thanks for all of your suggestions. Andrew, even with the thumb drive and dongle inserted (both USB ports) I still think the video intercept needs to be installed on the boot drive. I don't see any plug and play means of running JFW such as System access has. Of course, I could be wrong and I would welcome being wrong on this one. Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Problems with a size of the C partition
by Frank Ventura 06 Jan '09

Hi Matt, I get the same results no matter if I use RAID 0 or 1. Disk management shows the correct size of the C partition (in the case of RAID 1 it is 231.8 gb). However, in Windows Explorer the properties of the C drive show it to have a capacity of only 5gb and I cannot use any space beyond the 5gb. Running CHKDSK on the C partition shows the cluster size to be 512 bytes instead of the expected 4096 bytes. However, I cannot find anywhere in the Dell Server setup utility nor the RAID controller to specify this value. Andrew, thanks I am thinking the same thing that this is not a partition size issue at all for the same reason; that the disk manager shows it as the correct size with no unallocated space on disk. The first time I ran the setup utility I used the default of 12gb, the second time I set it to 20gb with the same results. I still haven't located a link to the latest disk image of the install utility. Like I said the only oddity I can see is that CHKDSK reports the cluster size of the C partition as being 512 bytes instead of the normal 4096 bytes. I have been told by someone else that the cluster size could cause the issue I am having. However, I cannot find anything in the server setup utility, nor the documentation for the Sc440 or Dell SAS 5ir RAID controller to specify a cluster size. Thanks for all the help Frank -----Original Message----- From: blind-sysadmins-bounces(a)lists.hodgsonfamily.org [mailto:blind-sysadmins-bounces@lists.hodgsonfamily.org] On Behalf Of Andrew Hodgson Sent: Monday, January 05, 2009 5:43 AM To: Blind sysadmins list Subject: Re: [Blind-sysadmins] Problems with a size of the C partition Hi Frank, I am slightly worried about using Partition Magic, especially if you see the partition size is the expected disk size minus the utility partition. Did you download the latest version of the Dell installation utility? There is also a firmware update DVD you could download, which would ensure that the software you were running on for example the RAID controller, BIOS etc, was current. When you are going through the steps of the Dell utility, after the RAID selection screens, there is an option to choose the size of the initial OS partition. What did you do at that step? Did you just enter the maximum HDD size, or stick with the default? Was the default 5GB or 12GB? Thanks. Disk manager also reports the Utility partition correctly as a 39mb ISA configuration partition. The Dell set up utility only seems to give me disk options to change from RAID 1 or 0 and the type of file system which I have selected NTFS both times. RAID0 on a server--especially on the system disk is a bad idea; if something happens to either disk, everything is lost. You will needed sighted assistance to use Acronis Disk Director but it will definitely work on a Dell server; you can grab a demo from their web site. Sorry if I missed the response but what do you encounter when in Disk Management? Matt
