Hello, Well, I am stuck. As I said I got the surface pro 3 to boot off USB media, in this case it's microsoft-provided recovery image. All went well, until I tried to wipe and restore the system, I selected something like remove all, thinking it would nuke the partition, it started, then said it couldn't continue as the system was missing a required partition. Now earlier in the process I selected skip the key because I didn't and don't have it. This I have come to learn is the bitlocker drive encryption key. This machine does have a tpm chip in it so I assume it stores the key there. The problem is it was most likely backed up on the previous owner's skydrive account, which I don't and can't get access to obviously. The only thing I do have is the KEY ID which it says go to windows.microsoft.com/recoverykeyfaq to utilize. This is not valid because it points to the skydrive account, or written down/printed out key, or key on a USB thumb drive, I have none of that. I'm open to suggestions. The one other idea I have is to try derrick's boot n nuke on the drive, totally smoke it and do a fresh install from the USB recovery image I have. Suggestions welcome. Thanks. Dave.

Firefox 57 Quantum and NVDA under Win 7

Hi all, System: Win 7 Pro 64 Bit Screenreader: NVDA 2017.3 Firefox Version: 57.0 64 Bit I just installed Firefox 57 Quantum on this machine. I read online that this version should be more performant than the older versions and use less system resources. though i had to downgrade again to version 56.0.2 and disabling updates for a while because my pc decided to not like that version all that much. CPU usage rose drastically and the computer became unresponsive. I wonder if that is a NVDA thing or other people might have the same issues with other assistive technology. Greetings, Simon

Anyway, I've got a surface, model unknown and I'm needing to boot it off this usb thumb drive to both check out it's model and information about it as well as resetting the password. NERF as an alternative for UEFI?

Hi all, I just read an german article about NERF. That could be an alternative to UEFI. NERF is developed by Google and some other companys which might replace UEFI. I read about that in an article that mentioned in the first place about the guy who was able to turn off Intel Management Engine earlier this year. Today there was a new article that the man was able to enter into the engine and might also be able to replace UEFI with NERF. I wonder if NERF might be an alternative to UEFI for us because NERF is based on the Linux kernel. So we might be able to get something accessible. Haven't time at the moment to research further or to read more but i guess those 2 things might be interesting. Greetings, Simon

recovering data from a usb3 external hard drive

Hello, This drive is not mine, nor is the error that brought it to me. A friend of mine, I believe if the information I have is accurate, mistakenly thought this drive a 4TB my passport Seagate I believe, quick formatted it. The size is 4tb of which 3.63tb show up. I had him get another drive, this one a 4tb western digital I believe it's an easy store, this one also with 3.63 tb available. This format was done on a win10 machine. I've tried twice to recover anything using the free recuva program. Running a deep scan shows 27 files but it can't get any of them. Running for a better word the light scan shows the same 27 files, but in that case I can highlight them all, right click, choose recover selected. I selected the easystore drive and attempted a recovery. First issue it told me that I needed 3.63tb only 3.62 were available. The drive had some content from western digital on it, I moved it off the drive and tried it again. This time it said insufficient space needed 3.63tb available 3.63tb, numbers were identical, but it asked me if I wanted to try a different recovery path, which that's the only drive I've got that can recover such a substancial load. Then I thought well maybe when both the my passport was originally formatted/partitioned and accidentally quick formatted, maybe the cluster sizes were incompatible between the my passport and the easystore. So I went in to format, didn't do anything to either drive, but compared the cluster size, blew my theory away both have a cluster size of 4096k. I hit cancel so nothing more was done. I'm kind of stuck. It takes about a day for the initial scan, i'm assuming the same neartime for the recovery, this is my third attempt. I then got the idea of recovering each of the 27 individual files. Tried that and it said I didn't have permissions to perform the recovery operation, which makes no sense, I'm an admin on this box, also win10 pro, his win10 is home, but neither of those usb drives should be dealing with permissions, even though they're both ntfs. I'd appreciate any suggestions, I'm kind of stuck. Thanks. Dave.

Hi David, You could use any linux distro. the most have those tools by default if you want to install a vm. grml isn't made for that though you could try. maybe grml2hd is still in there. though the wiki and google is a good friend on that. I also would do that on bare metal. Better to do that that way instead over a vm because then the hd can be accessed directly.
